A local coalition PHB3—Preserve our Historic Buildings, Bluff and Bike Path has been formed in response to a local Milwaukee developer's attempt to some how incorporate the Goll House on Prospect Avenue into a new high rise condo. The Goll Mansion is one the last historic homes left on Prospect Avenue. PHB3's goal is to block the construction of this project which threatens the not only the home; but the bluff on which the building would sit and the bike path at the bottom of the bluff. The bike bath runs on the west side of Lincoln Memorial Drive on Milwaukee's lakefront.
I being a former downtowner ran on that path quite regularly and there were no shortage of others that used it as well. It was already closed for a number of months to accommodate the rebuilding of the Brady Street foot bridge (a public improvement project) and another closing or rerouting would be a disservice to the people that use it.
Lakefront/downtown development is good for the city, but should not come at the expense of the natural resources of the area and the people who enjoy them. There are plenty of sites in the city on which condos can be developed without using a part of the city's history as a door mat.
